St Athan station is a large site split in to three. RAF (East side), Army (West side) and DSG in the middle. Major maintenance tasks on large RAF Aircraft are carried out here. Other units are a Mountain Rescue Team, the University of Wales Air Squadron, No. 634 Volunteer Gliding School, the Joint Aircraft Recovery and Transportation Squadron, No 71 (Inspect & Repair) Squadron and Special Forces Support Group . No 4 School of Technical Training delivers 'parenting' services to a wide range of MOD units across South Wales including RAF Pembrey Sands Air Weapons Range and approximately 50 Air Training Corps squadrons. The site is planned to become home to the Defence Technical Academy, a future centre of excellence for military training, due to open in 2014.

All the facilities on the station are available to service personnel and their dependants. Facilities include a Swimming pool, Gym, Golf Club, Cinema, Learning Centres, Medical Centre, Hairdressers, Post Office and more.

St Athan is situated in a quiet and beautiful countryside area, with its own beach in the Vale of Glamorgan about 3 miles from Cardiff International Airport. Llantwit Major (Llanilltud Fawr) (under 2 miles) is the closest town, it has a good range of shops, banks, doctors, dentists, schools, Leisure Centre and also a bus and train station and its own beach etc. Barry and Bridgend are larger towns close by and the city of Cardiff is approximately 18 miles away.
